What Qualifies as a Plumbing Emergency?

A plumbing emergency occurs anytime you have a major plumbing problem. However, what qualifies as a major problem for one person doesn’t necessarily qualify for everyone. Here’s what most plumbers consider a major issue:

  • There’s water everywhere. This can cause significant damage and you’ll want to get that flow stopped as soon as possible.
  • You have sewage in your house. Sewage not only causes damage because it’s wet but it also brings bacteria and other undesirable substances into your home. These can make you sick and their smell can permeate your entire home. Stop the flow by calling a plumber ASAP.
  • Your life is hampered in some major way. A stubborn toilet clog may not be an emergency for some people but, if it’s in your only toilet, that’s definitely urgent. Just let us know how the problem affects you so we can get there soon.

What Should I Do in a Plumbing Emergency?

As soon as you realize you’re having a plumbing emergency, call us at Big Cat right away. If you need to deal with the issue, make sure our number is programmed into your phone or that the person making the call knows how to get ahold of us.

If the problem has clean water flowing into your home, turn off your main water valve. This is usually located in your utility closet or in your basement, though on older homes it may be outside by an outdoor faucet. Turn it all the way to the right. Once you’ve done this, don’t use any water for any reason until you’ve had the problem fixed and the water is back on.

Once you’ve turned off your water and made your call, take some deep breaths. Emergency plumbing problems aren’t fun but we can fix them and get you back on your feet fast.
