If you are experiencing water damage, try turning off the flow of water. You may still want to call an experienced plumber, but you can limit the amount of damage done if you can get the water to stop.

First, if it is a sink or a toilet that is leaking, try to find the turnoff valve for that particular part of your home. It may be under the sink or behind the toilet. Turn the knob or lever all the way to the right to stop the water.

If the flow is coming from somewhere else or that doesn’t work, turn off the main water valve for your home. It’s usually in the basement or the garage. Again, turn it all the way to the right and see if the water stops.

If you do this last one, don’t use any water in your home until we fix the problem!
