How to Keep Your Drains Clog-Free

clog-free drain in pueblo,co sink

Did you know that you’re more likely to have plumbing problems in the winter than at other times of year? It’s true! Between freezing temps and extra people in the house, your plumbing in Colorado Springs or plumbing in Florence can really struggle.

5 easy ways to keep your drains clog-free include:

  1. Rinse your garbage disposal regularly
  2. Throw food waste in the trash
  3. Keep grease out of your drains
  4. Clean your drains and overflows regularly
  5. Don’t flush certain items down the toilet

Read on for more details on how you can avoid the most egregious plumbing problems. You may still experience issues, but you’ll have a better chance of escaping them.

1) Rinse Your Garbage Disposal Regularly

Run hot water down your garbage disposal and drain every day, and put a cup of dishwashing soap down once a week. This helps keep gunk out of the disposal and can clear your drains, too. Less buildup means less risk of clogs.

2) Throw Food Waste in the Trash

It seems easy to throw food waste in the garbage disposal, but this can cause significant clogs. Take the time to package up food waste (so it doesn’t smell!) and put it in the trash can instead. This includes a lot of things people normally put down the disposal, like coffee grounds, egg shells, bones, potato peels, corn husks, and more.

3) Keep Grease (And More!) Out of Your Drains

Grease looks like it goes down your drain easily, but when it gets cold and solidifies, it can become a sticky lump that catches everything else that comes down, too. Put grease in a glass jar and throw it away if you want to stay clog-free this winter.

4) Clean Your Drains & Overflows Regularly

If you know your system tends to clog, take time to clean out your drains and overflow spaces. Put baking soda and vinegar down the drains, then run water down a few minutes later. You can also fill up your sink with soapy water until that flows down the overflow drain, if you have one. This keeps things flowing well.

5) Don’t Flush Certain Items Down the Toilet

If it’s not bodily waste and it’s not toilet paper, it shouldn’t go down the toilet. This goes for sanitary pads, tampons, napkins, dental floss, hair, and literally anything else. Put it in the trash can and tell any guests who come that they need to do so, too, especially if your system has frequent clogs.
